BTS – Best Of Me (English Translation and Ramblings)

Track 03 on Love Yourself 承 ‘Her’ album.

Written by: Andrew Taggart, Pdogg, Rap Monster, Suga, J-Hope, “hitman” bang, Ray Michael Djan Jr, Ashton Foster, ADORA, Sam Klempner

They left the song vague enough to be interpreted as a love song but I think the common consensus is that this is a song to the ARMYs.

I really love the HER album because it feels different every time I listen to it.  Personally, I feel like it’s a very complex album and I get sad when people think it has less depth than the TEAR album.

It’s an album that’s masquerading as a simple and happy album of love and devotion.  And then when you delve deeper, a lot of the songs feel quite a bit darker with hidden pain.  But then you listen to it even more, and it feels really not that dark because it’s not like BTS is crying over the pain.  They seem to accept the bits of pain and darkness, in a matter of fact way, and embrace the love and positivity.

But you know what happens when someone who gets hurt smiles at you like it’s okay?  It makes you really want to hug them in a tight hug.  HER album evokes these types of emotions..

When you say that you love me
I walk above the heavens
Tell me of eternity, just one more time
When you say that you love me
I just need that one phrase
That it won’t change, just one more time

You seem like the whole of this world to me
Harder and more painfully embrace me
Maybe the more literal translation would be “squeeze me in a hug”, rather than “embrace”
This line is not clear whether they’re saying you embrace me harder, or actually asking the other person to please embrace me harder.  It can work both ways.
Ie:
You seem like the whole of this world to me, that squeezes me harder and more painfully (than anything) into a hug.
OR:
You seem like the whole of this world to me.  Please squeeze me harder and more painfully into a hug.
The word pain here is not really negative.  Something like love and affection being painful is commonly used to describe fierce, empathetic and protective affection in Korea.
I think the acceptance of something painful to get something good is kind of a common Korean trait too.  There’s a certain sentiment that if you do anything hard and passionately enough, there will be pain.

The “something” that we shared
And you can’t make it nothing
I wish for you to not forget
that you’re my
Day to day
Summer, winter
You might not know but

You got the best of me
You got the best of me
So please just don’t leave me
You got the best of me

I have not seen “the end” for me yet either
can think of this line as being more like:  I have not seen where the end of my journey will be either
But if that [end] existed, wouldn’t it be you?
I wanted to be warm supportive waves

But why hadn’t I known that you’re the sea?
(interpretation from 감자밭할매) – copying and pasting from my Sea translation.
The song could be directed to loved one/fans.
BTS wanted to be a warm support (waves), but realized that the loved one/fans were actually even bigger then them (the sea) in their love and support back to BTS.

Since it is the sea that makes the waves, it is the love that BTS receives that creates BTS and the love that BTS can give out.
What can I do?  I speak with your words
And I breathe your breaths
I’ll be you
You, who are holding me,
I kiss your sword
To Kiss the sword is the highest form of confirming an oath or ones loyalty.   (source) So this is like BTS pledging loyalty to the ARMYs and also implies ARMYs are higher in the hierarchy compared to BTS.  This repeats the idea where BTS are the waves but ARMYs are the sea.

However, the song is much more complex than the simple, I love ARMYs type of a song.  The word they use for “hold” is closer to “have a hold of someone by power,” rather than to embrace.  It gives the feeling of a definite power imbalance.  It’s kind of like, “I am helpless to your power as you have a hold of me, but I still willingly pledge my loyalty to you.”

The word “hold” they used is more commonly used to hold objects, which makes this play of words even more interesting, because  날  means “me” as well as “blade.”
So the line:  You, who are holding me can mean, You, who are holding the blade.
These are my favorite lines in the song, interpreted this way:
You, who are holding the blade,
I kiss your sword.
meaning:   “you’re holding something that can hurt me, but I accept the possibility of being hurt and still kiss even that blade that can hurt me.”

But if you look at the last 3 lines together including “I’ll be you”, the whole song comes off as not so dark.
I’ll be you
You who are holding me
I kiss your blade.
So maybe it doesn’t matter that ARMYs have hold on BTS, because BTS is kind of one with the ARMYs.  And if BTS are like the waves, they are part of the sea that ARMY represents.  So it feels less like BTS conceding that ARMYs have power to hurt them and more like accepting that they can be hurt, by themselves and by ARMYs since we kind of make up each other.  And again, we see the willingness to accept the possibility of pain.

So take my hand right now
I can’t believe that I can be like this
The words that I said in my head thousands of times
You, please don’t leave me.
The meaning is closer to: “even if everyone leaves me, until the end, you can’t leave me.”  Can’t get it to sound as desperate in English as it sounds in Korean.
You got the best of me.
You got the best of me.

It doesn’t really matter whether it’s dream or reality
Just the fact that you’re by me
Thanks

Day to day
Summer, winter
You might not know but

You got the best of me
You got the best of me
So please just don’t leave me
You got the best of me

You’re my salvation
You’re my window
I’m fine if there’s just you
You got the best of me
I need you
So please just don’t leave me
You got the best of me

I, who used to rain
I, who used to snow
Stop all the misery
And bring the heavens
Don’t speak of it lightly
There is no me without you
You’re my best of me
The best of me.

Just give me belief in myself
That’s all I’ve wished for
Even if there are no rules
There are ways to love
literally “there are laws to love” which is an expression to mean “there are methods/ways to love”
Who got the best of me?
Who got the best of me?
Nobody knows, but I know me
That you’re my best master

You got the best of me
You got the best of me
So please just don’t leave me
You got the best of me

You’re my salvation
You’re my window
I’m fine if there’s just you
You got the best of me
I need you
So please just don’t leave me
You got the best of me

When you say that you love me
I walk above the heavens
Tell me of eternity, just one more time
When you say that you love me
I just need that one phrase
That it won’t change, just one more time
