BTS – Paradise (English Translation and Ramblings)

Track 05 on:  Love Yourself 轉 ‘Tear’ Album (2018)

Written by:  lophiile, MNEK, RM, Song Jae-kyung, SUGA, J-hope

This song is based on New Year well-wishes of Suga for 2018

2017 had a lot of fun things happen,
but I’m sure there will be more fun things happening in 2018.
I think it will be a more awsome year.
Not for us, but for you.
I hope everything you do work out well, and you’ll achieve your dreams.
Those of you who don’t have dreams, it’s okay.  Sometimes you might not have dreams.
As long as you can be happy.
Happily..starting a new year.. And happily…ending the previous year..
I hope you’ll have 2018 like this.

I found this song very interesting, especially in comparison to their 2014 song “Tomorrow”.   At the first glance, the two songs seem to be polar opposites in that “Tomorrow” tells you to follow your dreams, while “Paradise” tells you that it’s okay to not have dreams.

But on the other hand, both of the songs are about taking a break and rest.  You can kind of picture them running on the metaphorical path of life…and pausing occasionally.

In “Tomorrow”, you get the sense that they’re still running towards their dreams.  But they’re just not going forward despite the running.  So they take a break,  but they’re still eyeing their dream of tomorrow.  They seem much more desperate and anxious, almost trying to will themselves to believe that it’s okay to not go forward for a bit…before they start running again.

And then they run.  They step on it in “Never Mind” and run some more in “Run.”

I think at the end of 2017, Suga said (I forget which interview) that they went beyond achieving dreams to even things that they didn’t dream of.  I think suddenly finding yourself not having that dream to run towards must have been a bit scary…

And in “Paradise”, they’re taking another break.  But they seem to have sorted themselves out more now.  They may find another dream to run towards someday….. but seem more relaxed and trying to enjoy the path, rather than being in a rush.

(You can read lyrics to Tomorrow here)

Marathon, marathon
Life is long, take it slow
42.195
42.195 km is the distance of the marathon, which is 26.219 miles.
At its end is full of paradise of dreams.

But really, the world is different from what’s promised.
We have to run, we have to step on it
reminds me of  “Never Mind
When they fire the signal
You, without a destination
Without any scenery
Until you’re out of breath
You need to you need to

It’s okay to stop and stand
You don’t need to run without knowing the reason at all
it’s okay to not have a dream
If there are brief moments when you can feel happiness
It’s okay to stop and stand
Now (we/you) don’t run without knowing the purpose
reminds me of “Run
It’s okay to not have a dream
All the breaths you exhale are already in paradise

We dream our dream from someone else (Like debt)
OR:  We borrow our dream from someone else (Like debt)
꾸다 –> to borrow/to dream
We learn that we must become great (Like the light)
빚 = debt
빛 = light
The Korean word for debt and light are spelled very slightly differently but pronounced the same – thus, “like debt” sounds the same as “like the light”
Your dream, in reality is a burden
If only the future is the dream
Then what was it that I dreamed last night?
It’s okay if the name of the dream is different
Buying a laptop next month
Or just eating and sleeping
Or just having lots of money doing nothing
As if dream must be something so grandiose
Just be anyone
We deserve a life
Whether it’s big or small, you’re just you

But really, the world is different from what’s promised.
We have to run, we have to step on it
When they fire the signal
You, without a destination
Without any scenery
Until you’re out of breath
You need to you need to

It’s okay to stop and stand
You don’t need to run without knowing the reason at all
it’s okay to not have a dream
If there are brief moments when you can feel happiness
It’s okay to stop and stand
Now (we/you) don’t run without knowing the purpose
It’s okay to not have a dream

All the breaths you exhale are already in paradise

I don’t have a dream
At times, it’s scary to dream
Just living like this
Just surviving, this is my small dream
To dream, to hold the dream
To breathe, is at times too hard
Telling me so-and-so lives like this, lives like that
The world pours curses at me.

Yeah,
The world doesn’t have the right to curse you
Because it never taught how to dream in the first place
Because it’s a dream that was made up
Sleep talking of tears
Waking you up from the nightmares, for you
Let’s try to smile every day now, in that paradise

It’s okay to stop and stand
You don’t need to run without knowing the reason at all
It’s okay to not have a dream
All the breaths you exhale are already in paradise

Stop runnin’ for nothin’ my friend
Now, stop this foolish race
Stop runnin’ for nothin’ my friend
All the breaths you exhale are already in paradise

Stop runnin’ for nothin’ my friend
A dream that everyone dreams is not needed
Stop runnin’ for nothin’ my friend
All the words that create you are already in paradise

  1. I cannot thank you enough, Muish, for your translations & deeper insight into their songs, meanings of words they choose, etc. I love and appreciate what they do & you help me understand so much more
    I purple you!! 💜👏🏻

  2. Your dream, in reality is a burden
    (너의 dream 사실은 짐)
^ I always thought this line was ‘Your dream, in reality is Jim’ and related it to the movie ‘The Truman Show’ which stars Jim Carrey haha

    1. That’s interesting. In the v-live where RM is wearing his Ryan PJs he talked about immersing in other people’s imaginations and spoke about the Truman show.

  3. Man, I don’t know how much Yoongi was involved with the lyrics, but even if it was only inspired by his words it’s still somehow perfect for me. I assume he at least wrote his little verse, and I find that amazing because that’s where my favorite lines are: “Just living like this; Just surviving, this is my small dream; To dream, to hold the dream; To breathe, is at times too hard” I really feel this, I love him so much :(

    1. Yoongi posted something on fancafe a year ago which included the words, ‘It’s okay if you don’t have a dream.’ so I’m assuming he’s involved in it in a way.
