BTS – Magic Shop (English Translation and Ramblings)

Track 07 on Love Yourself 轉 ‘Tear’ album.

Korean lyrics from Naver Music.

Written by:  Jungkook, Hiss noise, RM, Jordan “DJ Swivel” Young, Candace Nicole Sosa, ADORA, J-Hope, Suga.   (I think produced by: Jungkook, Hiss noise, RM)

This is supposed to be a fan-song written by Jungkook to the ARMY….  but why does it sound like a Jungkook’s fan-song to the older members?

With all the references in this song to the things that the older members have said/tweeted, etc…. I can just picture  Jungkook with his wide-eyed attentiveness, soaking it all up to use as nourishment for his own growth.

I know you hesitate, because even when speaking the truth
It all comes back as scars
I won’t tell you something cliche like, “be strong”
I’ll just tell you, tell you my story

What did I tell you?
That we’d win, right?

Tweet trans:

[the lyrics seen in picture:  Without trying to express something cool, but just exactly the way it is]

Me and my everyone will win in the end.  When nobody notices, in a very natural way.

I hadn’t been able to believe it (really)
Will we really be able to win?
Had we made
This miracle that’s not a miracle?
(No) I was just here
And you had come to approach me
I do believe in your galaxy

I want to hear your melody
The stars in your milky way
How will your sky be embroidered?
At the end of my despair
Don’t forget that I had found you
Or:  Don’t forget that I looked for/searched for/needed you.
You’re my last reason (to live) as I stood at the top of the abyss
Live

On the days when I hate being me, when I just want to disappear forever
This line can mean, “when you hate being yourself, when you just want to disappear forever” even though it uses “I” in the lyrics…  As this is often how they phrase these things when talking about other person’s feelings/situation..in their shoes.
Let’s make a door in your heart
Opening that door will lead to this place
You can believe in this,  this Magic Shop that will comfort you
From the Teaser 1 of “Fake Love”:
“Magic Shop” is a psychodramatic technique that exchanges fear for a positive attitude.”
This is actually a pre-existing psychological therapy technique…although I don’t know how mainstream.

Have a cup of warm tea
And look up at that galaxy
You’ll be alright, oh, here is Magic Shop.

So show me (I’ll show you)
So show me (I’ll show you)
So show me (I’ll show you)
Show you show you

When blooming, to be like a rose
When blowing in the winds, to be like cherry blossoms
When fading, to be like morning glory
Like those beautiful moments

From J-Hope’s Thanks to in HYYH Pt. 1 album

필 때는 장미꽃처럼
흩날릴 때는 벚꽃처럼
질 때는 나팔꽃처럼
항상 그 순간 순간
아름답고 열정적으로 살겠습니다

Trans:
When blooming, to be like a rose
When blowing in the winds, to be like cherry blossoms
When fading, to be like morning glory
I’ll try to live beautifully and passionately
Each one of these moments, always.

I always wanted to be the best
So I was always rushing and was anxious
Comparing myself to others became my daily life
And the greed that used to be a tool had come to restrain me became my leash

Reference to Agust D mixtape “Last”  lyrics.

It’s been a long time since passion has died and comparing myself to others have become my daily life.

…The greed that used to be my tool is now turning to swallow me, ruin me and put a leash around my neck

But you know, looking back, the truth is I..
Don’t think being the best was what I wanted
I wanted to be supportive and move your emotions
Your sadness and pain, I want to take those away

On the days when you hate being you, when you just want to disappear forever
This still uses “I” in Korean, but I think “you” is more accurate.  It’s like talking in your shoes. The lyrics do work either way though…
Let’s make a door in your heart
Opening that door will lead to this place
You can believe in this,  this Magic Shop that will comfort you

Have a cup of warm tea
And look up at that galaxy
You’ll be alright, oh, here is Magic Shop.

So show me (I’ll show you)
So show me (I’ll show you)
So show me (I’ll show you)
Show you show you

Will you believe it I told you I was afraid of everything too?
In these times with all the sincere truths remaining
All your answers are here in this place you found
In your galaxy, in your heart

You gave me the best of me
“Best of Me” from Love Yourself: Her reference, of course
So you’ll give you the best of you
Because you found me, because you acknowledged me
Reference to RM’s comment in the Wings Tour Final concert.
You gave me the best of me
So You’ll give you the best of you
You’ll find it, the galaxy inside you

So show me (I’ll show you)
So show me (I’ll show you)
So show me (I’ll show you)
Show you show you

As this line shows:

So show me (I’ll show you)

I really like that the support with ARMY and BTS is such a bi-directional/reciprocal thing.

  1. Hi, thank you for ur great great translation and interpreting. Btw, could I use ur translation and analysis to translate into Vietnamese? Of course I’ll take out with full credit 😊

    1. Since JK is the main producer for this song and he said he made the songs as a song for the ARMY in the pre-album v-live, I’m assuming he generally outlined/oversaw what the song will be about, etc. It does seem like RM wrote the actual words of the lyrics though, which is not surprising. RM also wrote the words of “Begin” based on the content JK wanted…so I’m assuming it’s similar to that.. RM is so good at actually putting things into words.

  2. J-hope’s verse always gets me. Do you know whether he referenced it from somewhere or were those his own words? Because they’re just so so beautiful and uplifting and inspiring, and I can feel the elegance and grace in those words. It feels like a comfortable soothing embrace and a warm cup of coffee in the morning.

    1. As far as I know, his “Thanks To” note is something he came up with himself. I don’t think there were similar phrases before that…. (as far as I can tell from my own reading and googling, which is not always 100% accurate)

  3. Hi again! I’d have to apologize for requesting for the Paradise translation coz the lyrics are straightforward and I got the meaning behind the song anyway. ^____^ I just want to say thanks again for keeping this blog alive until now (I just read your homepage of when this started). I can now read about BTS’ older songs. I’m a fairly new I-ARMY and been listening to BTS’ songs like breathing air. I just couldn’t stop. I’ve searched for translations but most of the time get lost behind lines that makes no sense. Although I feel what they’re trying to put across, it’s still nice to learn more about the songs in-depth, thanks to you =)

    1. Don’t worry~! :) I might do Paradise. I’m just a bit slow, so I need to stew on some of the songs longer and think about them.

  4. Hi Muish! First, I just want to say thank you for this, seriously. I’m crying right now after reading your translations and references to the lyrics of Magic Shop. I’ve stumbled across your site after looking for more accurate translations of lyrics as I really want to give justice to BTS’ songs. I often see comments that international fans don’t really understand the deeper meaning of the songs, so I really appreciate your hard work and taking the time to do this for us. It’s really touching. I’m going to be referring to your site from now on. I hope you can translate Paradise too. Thanks so much in advance!
