j-hope (BTS) – Airplane + Blue Side (English Translation + Ramblings)

Track 06 of the Mixtape.

The lyrical theme to Airplane (track 06) seems similar to Baseline (04) and HangSang (05) in some ways, but a bit softer…

This album works so nicely as a whole.  It also seems to be a BTS characteristic that while they have some hype and anger at the world, they always try to leave on a more positive and soothing note.

The lyrics on MV are pretty good.  I guess mine tends to be too literal sometimes, and rambling, but they did a really good job with general flow and meaning.

I remember myself again from back then
When the barren dry land burned me up
I ran looking at the blue sky
I wanted to fly, on that Airplane
The “barren dry land” is reminiscent of the desert, which represented trials and despair in Sea.

I remember myself again from back then
When the barren dry land burned me up
I ran looking at the blue sky
I wanted to fly, on that Airplane Airplane

I still can’t believe it
Lost in wonder of flight by Gwangju bumpkin
On dreams that were high high
I’m flying over the beautiful world
Whenever I get on,
I still think of the excitement of the first flight to Japan
Because that was when my dream took flight
And made now possible
Everywhere
Now Issue Man,
When the flashes light up
I’ll fill up with blessings for safe flight
God Bless

I remember myself again from back then
When the barren dry land burned me up
I ran looking at the blue sky
Now I can fly as much as I want on the Airplane

Someone is talking shit about me
Some people seem to be lonely even in their jealousy
I don’t pay them attention, I just end up smiling
Drink Champagne in my Airplane

Over the clouds, everyday
Over the clouds, everyday
Over the clouds, my feel
Over the clouds, Check it
With the clouds, chemistry
With the clouds, all day long
The fun of riding the clouds,  Looking at the clouds Fade in, You might not know Maybe
From being on plane for  years
Mileage is now in hundreds of thousands
I’ll console you who weren’t able to make it
I’ll gift you those flight points
Love Airplane mode
Turn off all my worries, No matter who says what
I’ll just keep my First class place
And look at the night sky
As fitting of my place right now
Few things about this section.

There is a common Korean saying “talking of catching the floating cloud” which means to talk of impossible delusional dreams.  So it really reinforces the idea that the impossible delusional dreams have been caught and become a reality.  It also ties back to the song “Daydream” as clouds can represent dreams.

Another common saying in Korea is “put someone on an airplane” which means to praise someone until that person feels like he is soaring.  So being on an airplane can be a metaphor for being highly praised as well.

I remember myself again from back then
When the barren dry land burned me up
I ran looking at the blue sky
I think of back then, on this Airplane

Someone is talking shit about me
Some people seem to be lonely even in their jealousy
I don’t pay it attention, I’m just happy
I feel the success in my Airplane

OUTRO:  BLUE SIDE (07)

Produced by Hiss noise, ADORA
(Hiss noise, ADORA, j-hope)

In my blue dream
I’m gonna hold you
Even if I’m told it’s not so
In my gaze

In my blue dream
I’m gonna hug you
Even if I’m told it’s not possible
In my embrace

Blue Side
Back to Blue Side
Blue Side
Back to Blue Side
Blue Side
Back to Blue Side
Blue Side
Back to Blue Side

Where they broke the phrase up makes it a bit confusing.  To rearrange the lines to make it easier to understand (albeit less poetic):

In my blue dream
I’m gonna hold you  /  in my gaze
Even if I’m told it’s not so —>exactly what’s not is very vague here.

What is the blue side here? Is it the Hope World? The blue sea? Is it the blue sky on the airplane?  The blue sky representing dreams?   Daydreams? Or all of these?

  1. About “Blue side”, here’s what J-Hope himself shared:

“This is a track that neatly ends the mixtape. I like the blue sky and breeze so I tried to melt them [into the song]. When I listen to this song, good memories come back to me. This song is about wishing to go back to when I didn’t know anything.”

    1. Basically wanting to back in the past, childhood & teen-age innocent (happy) moments. Knowing that physically it’s impossible, but memories of them still remain. For him blue sky and breeze are one of the triggers for these “good memories”.
There are different triggers for different people and not just few if course.
For example some of mine are related to different smells, what can bring back long forgotten happy memories ;) others are related to touch, like breeze blowing gently and I’ll remember something good what happened etc. etc. etc.

  2. Excellent! My first thought when the hixtape dropped was, ‘I can’t wait to see the muish translation.” =D

  3. Blue Side is honestly my favorite track on the album (at least for now). It’s short but it’s just soooooo perfect to my taste I love it. I was curious, in another translation for that track is says “I want to contain you/hold you” instead of “I will hold you/hug you” and “even if you say no/say we can’t” instead of “if it’s not so/not possible”. Would you say these are inaccurate? or is this one of those cases where more context would be needed and the lyrics are more free to interpret in a way.

    1. The literal translation is “I will contain you” but the Korean expression of literally “containing someone in their eyes” is to “hold them in their gaze/focus on them with their eyes.”

The “even if you say no” vs. “even if I’m told not so”… Hmmm.. the Korean phrase suggests “being told” and something being “no/not”. Very vague. That’s all the information that is given.

I guess both of the translation suggests “I’m” the one that is being told. It’s less specific who is saying the “no.” I had initially actually tried translating the phrase as something similar to “even if you say no” but then the phrase could be also taken as “even if the world tells me (something) is no/not it”. The “no” isn’t even really clearly telling someone “no” either. It’s more like, being told “(something) is not.”

And in Korea, there is a phrase saying “(something) is not”, that they say when something is not the right thing to do/something is not the optimal thing to do. So it can even be interpreted as “Even if I’m told this is not the thing to do/not the right thing to do” if I take it more as interpretation and less literal.

The 2nd paragraph where “we can’t” vs. “it’s not possible.” The phrase only gives information of “being told” (by whom, to whom??) and that something can’t be done.

Both these phrases are super short (only 6 characters in Korean), which gives too little information, which suggests the “Even if” part + “being told” part + something “no” related/not able to do, all in those 6 characters. But doesn’t give information on subject, object, exactly what they are being told “no” about, etc.

      1. Interesting! So I’m guessing that applies to the “I want” vs. the “I will”? Since it’s not specific it could be either way maybe. And on the subject of what he means by “blue side”, I think he said in his vlive that when he first wrote it he wanted something with a “blue vibe” like the sky or the wind. He also said something about wanting to return to his more “innocent, clueless self”, though I don’t know if he meant that was the theme of the song, or if he was innocent and clueless while writing it.
