52 Hz Whale

Aaaand…randomly translating some older poetic songs.  ^^  Before the new ones come out…

Writing this song out makes me really feel what a sad song this is, with a hint of hope for a better future. (Makes me reminisce 2015)

The most lonely creature in the world
I’m a whale
Do you wanna know my story?
Yeah~
I’ve never told this to anybody
Yeah, c’mon

In the middle of this wide ocean
A whale talks in lonely low-pitched tone.
The mouth closes from deep loneliness
knowing that no amount of shouting will reach another.
Whatever, it’s fine.  No matter what happens now, I don’t care.
When only the punk called loneliness will stay by my side
This padlock that gets locked, utterly alone in loneliness
“To lock padlock on your lips” means to close your mouth and not talk, no matter the provocation.   The fact he talks about the padlock, right after saying he closes his mouth, probably means the loneliness makes him unable to talk back to what people say to him.
Someone says, “Hey bastard, you’re almost like a celebrity now”
The “새끼/hey bastard” part is kind of informal term that young men would often call close friends.  “You’re almost like a celebrity now” is a  shade, suggesting that fame has changed him.  This sounds like it’s probably a quote of something his friends probably said to him.
Oh fuck that, Yeah, so what?
Even if someone is not able to stay by me, that’s fine.
The first “someone” sounds natural, but the second “someone” sounds mildly unnatural in that phrase (as it probably is even in the English translation).  That he specifically repeated this word makes it sound like he is talking about “the someone”/ a specific person, that has probably left him once he became a celebrity.
The things that are carelessly said to me become a wall
Even my loneliness becomes a pretentious act in your eyes
OR:  “Even my loneliness becomes a reason for grudge in your eyes”
척/chuk – pretense, grudge.

Locked in those walls
Even if I can’t breathe
Towards that surface,
Hey oh, oh hey oh yeah

Lonely lonely lonely whale
Singing alone like this
Although I’m like a deserted island
will I be able to shine brightly?

Lonely lonely lonely whale
Trying to sing again like this
Until this song with no reply
reaches the tomorrow

No more, no more baby
No more, no more
This endless signal wave
will someday reach
Even the other side of the earth

No more, no more baby
No more, no more
Even the blind whales
will be able to see me
I sing again today

The world can never know
How sad I feel
My hurt is like oil and water that can’t be mixed
using the 섞이다 (to mix), that sounds similar to 삭이다 (to soothe)
Almost sounds like “my hurt is like oil and water, that can’t be soothed”
For me, the attention ends when I’m breathing at the surface
I want to show as well,
the small lonely kid in the depths of ocean
My worth. Everyday
I feel motion sickness from my worries
The sticker is always below my ear
He feels nauseated with worry, expressed as motion sickness.
The sticker below ear is reference to Kimite – a scopolamine patch you can wear below your ear for motion sickness.  Kimite was interesting name for this drug, becauase it sounds very similar to “Kwimitae” which means “below ear.”
kimitepic
Never end,
Why is there never an end, every time hell
As time passes
The Neverland in the cold abyss
But I always think
Even if I sleep like a shrimp now, to dream like a whale
The praise that will come one day
Will make me dance every day
Being myself, Ye I’m swimmin’
“to sleep like a shrimp” means to “sleep in fetal position.”
There is also a very common saying “in the fights between whales, the shrimps are crushed” – meaning that the weak (shrimps) are innocent bystanders that are harmed in fights between those who are powerful (whales).
“Even if I sleep like a shrimp now, to dream like a whale” gives feeling of how he’s curled up in a fetal position, feeling powerless and small, unable to control his fate where he can be easily and carelessly be harmed by those who are more powerful.

I go towards my future
With that blue ocean
I believe in my hertz
Hey oh, oh hey oh yeah

Lonely lonely lonely whale
Singing alone like this
Although I’m like a deserted island
will I be able to shine brightly?

Lonely lonely lonely whale
Trying to sing again like this
Until this song with no reply
reaches the tomorrow

Mom said that the ocean is blue
She said to strongly express my voice
But what should I do?
This place is too dark
And full of other whales that speak differently
I juss can’t hold it ma
I want to say I love you
This song on repeat that I’m singing by myself
I run over this same music sheet again
This sea is too deep
But I’m still grateful
(that even if I cry, nobody will notice)
I’m a whalien

Lonely lonely lonely whale
Singing alone like this
Although I’m like a deserted island
will I be able to shine brightly?

Lonely lonely lonely whale
Trying to sing again like this
Until this song with no reply
reaches the tomorrow

No more, no more baby
No more, no more
This endless signal wave
will someday reach
Even the other side of the earth

No more, no more baby
No more, no more
Even the blind whales
will be able to see me
I sing again today

  1. Hii, I’ve read a few of your posts and I must say your writings made me fall in love with BTS (especially the trio rappers),, You’re really a genius :* Dangshineun jeongmal cheonjaeyeyo

May I ask you some questions??
1 Who’s your bias in BTS?
2 Are you Korean? ( Sorry, you don’t have to answer this if you don’t want)
3 and there’s this thing which keep bothering me, why do a lot of people hate BTS? Just whyy ..
    Thank youu so much, saranghae<3

  2. Hello dear, it’s nice to see your translation and song explanation on the 1st day of lunar new year ^^ May I ask if you have any other account (like Twitter, email… so on) that I can talk to you privately/quickly? Sometimes I have some problems in understanding BTS’s lyrics and since I can’t speak Korean, so it’s quite hard for me.

And by the way, could you translate SUGA’s First Love? I’ve read other English translation for this song, but I still wait for your post related to this.

Sorry if I have bothered you.

    Have a nice day! ^^

    1. Hi. I’m sorry to say that I do not do any SNS, check my email very irregularly (eg. once every few months when I’m using it to buy something) and don’t even carry my phone. ^^ I’m so lazy about keeping in contact with the world.

This blog is fairly low stress and I use it at random times. Sometimes I’m checking it daily, and other times I ignore it for weeks. But it is still the only thing that I check with any regularity (or despite irregularity), so feel free to leave me a comment here. Maybe I’ll make a post where people can leave short tranlsation requests in comments.

As for Suga’s First Love, it is very straight forward. There is like no word play in that song. I guess the only confusing part is the point of view. There are parts that is the piano talking to Suga, and sometimes it’s not clear on Lyrics videos. I wasn’t really planning on translating the First Love. Ashleygold25’s lyric video was quite good, but again, doesn’t really show which part is the piano talking (although I guess if you read it carefully, it’s pretty clear).

    2. Hi! as an addition to muish’s answer on First Love, if you listen to Suga’s voice (the way he speaks, intonation etc) it’ll become quite clear when it is the piano who’s talking and when it’s Suga who’s talking. When Suga himself is talking it’s with the same kind of voice that he uses for his other slow/emotional solo songs (e.g. hyyh intros). When it’s the piano talking, I feel like his tone/intonation fluctuates more (as in his voice becomes way less monotonous). Besides the tone/voice, you can also try to read the lyrics carefully and I think you’ll be able to understand who’s talking then as well.
